Peter Quirk, a Crouch End local, is one of YMCA North London’s most stalwart supporters, and has being a keen gym member for as long as he can remember. He has run in the YMCA Fun Run & Festival Adult 10k event for 18 out of 28 years of its existence.
Peter is one of our most avid and successful fundraisers for then event, being the top fundraiser on two occasions. The first time around, in 2002, he appeared in the Hornsey Journal and won a prize for his brilliant efforts. When offered the top fundraiser prize again in a later year, he chose to donate the prize to the charity instead. Peter has raised a staggering £9,000 over 18 races since 1998..
We asked him why he loves the event and how he manages to raise so much money every year. He says “I like the event as it gives me something to aim for in terms of keeping myself fit, and I drive myself by setting a target. I have managed to finish in less than an hour, but advancing years are lengthening the time to cover the 10k. I also like to support a local charity which supports homeless people. Over the last few years, homelessness has become a growing problem. You can see this at Finsbury Park under the railway bridges.” As far as motivating people to sponsor him is concerned, Peter adds, “Over the years I’ve offered reciprocal sponsorship for other people’s events, so that they give to the cause important to me, and I give to the cause important to them – a win-win situation.”
